It's like walking into the past. This is 1505 Fourth Street in Santa Monica, at Broadway Spanish Colonial Revival with Churrigueresque detail. It has been restored and is maintained by First Reality Management, and Kay Zarate of First Reality provided the tour. She said the building dated from 1904. It may be the work of Gogerty and Weyl, given their other work in Los Angeles or perhaps not.
The exterior detailing is amazing especially the fish but the interior is even better. It's like walking into a Raymond Chandler novel long hallways and dark wooden office doors surrounded by frosted glass, and a transom over each office door. And there are dramatic and moody skylights. You expect to find Phillip Marlow or Sam Spade behind one of the doors, sipping a stiff drink, cracking wise, and planning his next move. But these days its mostly small television production companies.
In the hallways you'll find pictures of Old Santa Monica, and a big blow-up of Jean Harlow, who hung around the place. Very cool.
