Wednesday, May 9, 2007 - Hollywood Jungle

This is the odd car of the day, a Suzuki jeep thing, parked on Santa Monica Boulevard, across the street from the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute.  Hey, the place was just fine for Marylyn Monroe.  She spent a lot of time there. (There's a photo of the Lee Strasberg place at Little Theaters with Real People.) She's long gone, but then there's this jungle car she might like.  She'd love the dashboard (and the faux leopard-skin upholstery and steering wheel cover, and the birdie).

The jungle car was parked, by the way, between Cha Cha Cha ("Contemporary Caribbean Cuisine") and the high-end local gay bar.

But we don't do jungle out here. We're at the edge of the desert. The climate is Mediterranean and the vegetation highly flammable chaparral. We've had less than four inches of rain in the last ten months.  Things burn. This is Griffith Park, the day after the Dante's Peak fire that was all over the national news.

Those shots were from the lookout on Mulholland Drive, just above the Hollywood Bowl.  Turn around and look down - jungle, down off Outpost, the neighborhood where Gore Vidal now lives. The rich and famous live dangerously, but it's a jungle out there.

Most of these photographs were shot with a Nikon D70 - using lens (1) AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm 1:35-4.5G ED, or (2) AF Nikkor 70-300mm telephoto, or after 5 June 2006, (3) AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor, 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED. They were modified for web posting using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Earlier photography was done with a Sony Mavica digital still camera (MVC-FD-88) with built-in digital zoom.
