You just have to stop, even if you have been there before, at "Nick Metropolis - The King of Collectable Furniture" – south of Hollywood at La Brea and First (see also the place's first website, as the new website is still under construction). The first visit was in March 2007, with lots of pictures and words, and there was a follow-up visit a few months later to visit the giant Marge Simpson. You'll get you dose of the surreal. This time the rusting knight forced a stop.
And I got to chat with Nick Metropolis himself, a fine fellow. Of course we had to reminisce about Rochester, New York – he's from there, went to Brighton High and all. As I spent much of the seventies teaching at the Harley School in Brighton there was a lot of ground to cover. But I learned quite a bit. Thirty percent of the business is supplying props to the studios. Take a look at Ugly Betty's living room on ABC – that's Nick's work. And you thought that was native Queens' kitsch.
The giant Marge Simpson is still there, in the back, and not for sale.
