Sunday, October 14, 2007 – Sunset Sculpture

You don't often think of the Sunset Strip as a place to find Greco-Roman sculpture, but you'd be surprised at what you'd find at the corner of Sunset and Harper, a few steps from Bette Davis' old penthouse apartment.

But the Gucci billboard across the street echoes the "classical" theme – Vesuvius under the famous Chateau Marmont. That's appropriate – the place is notorious.

On January 23, 2004, fashion photographer Helmut Newton died when his car crashed into a wall on the driveway of the Chateau Marmont, rolled across Sunset and came to rest under these very sculptures at Hollywood Hounds, a "doggie day spa" occupying the former home of Jay Ward Productions.  Oh, the indignity! Helmut Newton's ashes are buried next to Marlene Dietrich at the Städtischen Friedhof III in Berlin.  Rocky and Bullwinkle stayed here.
