Thursday, August 9, 2007 – The End Is Coming

Yeah, it's that "the end is coming" guy on Hollywood Boulevard, at Cosmo no less.  It seems we have about a year.  In the background, the young couple strolling along checking out the stars in the sidewalk doesn't seem to care. Tourists – bah!  But wait – that Osama fellow is the Archangel Michael and George Bush is Satan? Hollywood is a strange place.

And you thought the guys with such placards only appeared in the funny pages of your newspaper – they weren't real, just a bit of symbolic convention. We live in the funny pages.

Do you think you should leave? You can make arrangements around the corner on Wilcox. Actually, this is the window of an advertising firm.

You don't believe in biblical prophecy?  You probably shop here around the other corner, on Cahuenga – and you are lost.

If the world is indeed ending, you might as well get that tattoo you always wanted.  This place, directly across the street from that "the end is coming" guy, will do, although the name of the place isn't promising. But it does have a nice "end of the world" color scheme.

Okay, admit it, sometimes you wear that tin-foil hat to block the bad guys from transmitting those disturbing voices you hear in your head. You know, they do probably broadcast from the old Warner Pacific Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.  It does look both seedy and evil, looming over everything.

Okay, the car was parked a block south on Selma. What was this doing above the car? Signs and omens, portents and vague warnings – time to hurry home.

Most of these photographs were shot with a Nikon D70 - using lens (1) AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm 1:35-4.5G ED, or (2) AF Nikkor 70-300mm telephoto, or after 5 June 2006, (3) AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor, 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G ED. They were modified for web posting using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Earlier photography was done with a Sony Mavica digital still camera (MVC-FD-88) with built-in digital zoom.
