Tuesday, September 30, 2008 – Lighting the Set
The old joke is that the movie industry settled here because of the constant sunshine – Hollywood is the world's largest outdoor sound stage – and Kodak and the film industry settled in Rochester, New York – the world's largest darkroom. Having moved here after spending the seventies in Rochester – with no stops in-between – you get the joke. That seems about right. And here's the late September light, an alley in Hollywood –

Santa Monica Boulevard, across the street from the Troubadour (favorite story – in 1974, John Lennon and his friend, Harry Nilsson, both quite drunk, were tossed out of the place for heckling the Smothers Brothers) a bit of Streamline Moderne all out of place these days, but the lighting was just right.

Maybe it's better as a negative print. Blow it up, frame it, put it on the living room wall – your guests will be edgy and nervous.

The glass tower at Sunset and Vine is far better as negative print – spooky.
