Friday, February 26, 2010 – To Be Popular

"You like me, you really like me!" Those were Sally Field's words in her acceptance speech in 1985 when she won her Oscar. And although it was the second time she had won, it was obvious that this woman was driven by deep insecurities. But that's Hollywood – you live and die based on your popularity, on whether you're likeable. Talent and skills are secondary – perhaps necessary, or not – but they are not sufficient conditions for success. You have to be likeable. That's the key to it all.
And thus you find places like Popular Productions, a casting agency at 6207 Santa Monica Boulevard, not far from Paramount Studios, surrounded by the small working theaters, acting schools, craft shops and prop houses, down in the flats just south of Hollywood. They get it.

But if you must work on your skills, to the left, the Open Fist Theater, 6209 Santa Monica Boulevard –
