In the gardens at the Crossroads of the World on Sunset Boulevard, May opens with brilliant sunshine – no production companies filming there this day. But they should be, what with all the Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum x superbum) everywhere you look. These used to be classified in the genus Chrysanthemum, but they originated as a hybrid produced by Luther Burbank, a hybrid that ended up not much the source material at all. It was something new. And that's sort of a Hollywood thing. Warner Brothers, over the hill in Burbank – the town named for Luther Burbank – does the same sort of thing when they make movies based on a true story or a best-selling novel or whatever. You get something new, really. And these are sort of secondary suns.
