Because of its political leanings Santa Monica has been lightheartedly labeled The People's Republic of Santa Monica.  Satirist Harry Shearer calls it "The home of the homeless."  But even in its normal neighborhoods – the ones far back from the beach without the multimillion dollar McMansions – life is pretty good.  Here is 20th and Pearl – just behind Santa Monica City College - and a slice of real life.  The real Southern California?  Perhaps so.
