Note from a reader - This appears to be a first-winter Heermann's gull. From Sibley's Guide - A distinctive spieces: dark and unpatterned. About the size of Ring-billed Gull but stockier. … This unique Pacific species is almost exclusively coastal. With its dark plumage, pointed wings and habit of chasing other seabirds to steal food, it is often mistaken for a jaeger. This appears to be a young (first-winter) bird. Adult gets more gull-like light/dark coloring. |
