The historic place, the Lido Apartments on Wilcox – the famous photographer Man Ray lived here in the early forties, he of the Photogram. In July 1921, Man Ray went to live and work in Paris, settling down in Montparnasse of course, where he made his mark in photography. James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, and Jean Cocteau posed for him, and he hung around with Marcel Duchamp. With Jean Arp, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso, Man Ray was represented in the first Surrealist exhibition at the Galerie Pierre in Paris in 1925. But Hitler and the war came along, and as his actual name was Emmanuel Radnitzky, he ended up here.
But Hollywood is not Paris. In 1951 it was back to Montparnasse. He never came back here.
