Tuesday, January 12, 2010 – The Local Saint

Wilshire Boulevard runs from downtown Los Angeles west to where it ends at the Pacific, in Santa Monica. It stops abruptly at the bluffs. The Pacific is right there, far below. And Saint Monica is right there too, with her back to the Pacific.

The sculpture is from 1934 – Millard Sheets worked with Edward Bruce to hire artists for the Public Works of Art Project, a New Deal effort to keep people working, even artists, as any work would do. So this was a Stimulus Project from the last time we were in deep, deep trouble. Of course this time around no one is suggesting public arts projects. That's too bad.
