The Royal Carlton, 5611 Carlton Way, in East Hollywood

Think about 1930. February 18 – while studying photographs taken the month before, Clyde Tombaugh confirms the existence of Pluto – March 3 – John Dillinger escapes prison using a wooden gun - August 6 – Judge Joseph Force Crater steps into a taxi in New York and disappears forever – August 9 – Betty Boop premiers in the animated film Dizzy Dishes. It was a strange year. And from 1930 this is the Royal Carlton, at 5611 Carlton Way in East Hollywood at Saint Andrews Place. The area is a scruffy few blocks east of Hollywood, hidden between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard – lots of tumbledown houses, an old elementary school behind giant chain-link fences, with a lot of gang activity – the usual young thugs in baggy jeans, fully armed. And in the middle of it all there's this 1930 Art Deco palace. It's a bit surreal, and you see it in movies now and then – location managers love the place. Of course there are plans to tear it down and replace it with a mixed-use project with retail and condos. But those plans are on hold – as in 1930 the construction financing fell through. The banks aren't lending any money – hard times. So here it stands.

Yes, that's an LAPD helicopter orbiting above. As this shot was taken, one block south, it was four black-and-whites blocking the intersection and eight or ten cops with their guns drawn, and a young gang thug face down in the street, handcuffed. LA is like that.
