The Wilshire Theater, 8440 Wilshire Boulevard, at the east end of Beverly Hills, was known as the "Fox Wilshire" when it opened on September 19, 1930. It's an Art Deco flight of fancy designed by the architect S. Charles Lee, and a landmark from Hollywood's Golden Age. For many years it was one of Fox's premier movie palaces, but no one had shown a movie there in decades and it had become a bit shabby, used for live performances now and then and shared with the arts group of a local synagogue. The last big event there might have been on November 4, 1953 – Marilyn Monroe arriving on the red carpet at the premiere of "How to Marry a Millionaire."
But it has come back to life and is being restored. Now it's the Saban Theater – a new performing arts center. They're almost finished.
