Hydrangea macrophylla, the species of Hydrangea native to Japan, with the common names Bigleaf Hydrangea, French Hydrangea, Lacecap Hydrangea, Mophead Hydrangea, Penny Mac and Hortensia. When he first saw these in 1753, Linnæus made up a new word for them – Hydrangea (hydr-, hydor "water" + angeion "vessel" = Hydrangea). The Japanese call them Rain Flowers – Ajisai.
