New angles on old buildings – on the northeast corner of Hollywood and Vine, the Equitable Building, a Gothic Deco commercial tower built in 1929, designed by Aleck Curlett, now with the giant neon Patron Tequila display on top –

The former Broadway-Hollywood department store, built in 1927, the work of architect Frederick Rice Dorn – restored and converted to condos, with a touch of green –

Nearby, a fan window –

The Kress, 6606-12 Hollywood Boulevard, 1935, Edward F. Sibbert – it was the Kress Dime Store and then in 1949 the building became the world headquarters for Frederick's of Hollywood. But now it's a multistory hot club – Paris Hilton had a masquerade ball here a while back. It's that sort of place.

The Knickerbocker on Ivar, 1925, E. M. Frasier – Rudolf Valentino was a regular at the bar here and on Halloween night in 1936, Harry Houdini's widow held her tenth séance on the roof of the hotel to contact him – that never did work. Frances Farmer was arrested in her room here in 1943, after skipping a visit with her parole officer. D. W. Griffith died in the lobby of the hotel in 1948. Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio used met in the hotel bar. Elvis Presley stayed at the here (Room 1016) while making his first movie, Love Me Tender. It's a Russian-American retirement home now.
