This Hollywood Director stands in front of the Luckman Plaza on the Sunset Strip, just where the Strip blends into Beverly Hills. It's "Going for Gold" by the Israeli sculptor Frank Meisler. Frank Meisler was born in Danzig, educated in England and graduated in Architecture at Manchester University, and now his home and studio are in the Artist’s Quarter of the Old City of Jaffa. In 1999, the Czech Academy of Art awarded him the Franz Kafka Gold Medal for Artistic Achievement. It figures. His doctor is across the street – but this is Hollywood. Lights! Camera! Action!
As for repose, a bit to the west, on the UCLA campus, you'll find "Mere Ubu" (1975) by the Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist from Barcelona, Joan Miró. He's the real thing. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, described him as "the most Surrealist of us all." That may be so.
