Wyland whale mural on the west wall of the soundstages at Paramount Studios on Gower Street

Whales! These are on the west wall of the giant soundstages at Paramount Studios, the soundstages on Gower Street that used to be RKO and then Desilu Studios. The mural is from "Wyland" and may have to do with Star Trek – the television show and all its variants were filmed behind this wall, along with all the Star Trek movies. You might remember the 1986 movie Star Trek: The Voyage Home – to save Earth from an alien probe, Kirk and his crew go back in time to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it, humpback whales. It was a comedy, and it won two Oscars – Best Cinematography and Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing.

Maybe that explains these whales.
