Walking Man mural by Nicholas Gagliarducci, 2009, Sunset Boulevard at North Vendome Street, Silverlake, Los Angeles

If you're in Paris at Place Vendôme just north of the Tuileries Gardens you'll find the Ritz on the west side of the square. Napoleon erected the bronze column in the middle of the square, to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz, made from cannon taken from the combined armies of Europe. And if you're in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard at North Vendome Street you'll also find history. Hidden on a north wall is the 2009 Walking Man mural by Nicholas Gagliarducci. This is out east of Hollywood in a scruffy low-end part of Silverlake, on the edge of Echo Park. But Gagliarducci captures the history of Los Angeles. It's one of the city's most evocative murals.
