Driving around, troubled, and then there it was – an open parking spot at First and Hope downtown. First and Hope – that had to be a sign. Symbolism, you gotta love it. And walk around the Walt Disney Concert Hall there will clear your head – it's a serene place, even if a little spooky. Of course it's Frank Gehry – America's non-Euclidean architect. And the place is also whimsical. Lillian Disney, Walt's widow, made the initial gift in 1987 to get it going. But groundbreaking was December 1999 and it opened on October 23, 2003 – so this project wasn't easy. To calculate the complex shapes of the curves Gehry had to use CATIA – the CAD/CAM/CAE software suite developed by the French guys at Dassault Systems in Toulouse. The software was created in the late seventies to develop their elegant and deadly Mirage jet fighters. But you can beat spears into plowshares. Frank Gehry did.
