December in Los Angeles means gardenias in bloom, and there are variations. Gardenia is a genus with a hundred forty-two species, all slightly different, all of the coffee family, Rubiaceae. And even if they're everywhere out here in December, they're not native – they come from the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and such places. But we love them - Billie Holiday wore gardenias in her hair, and called them her trademark. They're pretty cool. And by the way, Linnaeus named them after Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-1791) – a Scottish-born American naturalist. That's cool too.
