There is that line in that Eagles song Hotel California "You can check out, but you can never leave." They chose the musical form of a canon, like Johann Pachelbel did once, but for nightmare effect. They never said what hotel they were singing about, but it might have been the Hollywood Melrose Hotel, 5150-70 Melrose Boulevard, once known as the Melrose Arms, now the Monte Cristo Island Apartments. It's from 1927 the architect S. Charles Lee and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here's the standard view but the devil is in the details. Its a block west of Conway Recording Studios where Beck and Marilyn Manson and Fleetwood Mac and U2 have recorded albums, and where they recorded the soundtrack for Sleepless in Seattle. No one sleeps here.
